Our text today is Paul’s famous description of the Church as the body of Christ. Because we are individual members of one unified body we must realize that we need each other, we ought to respect each other, we ought to sympathize with each other and we must realize that Christ needs us.
“He has no hands but our hands
To do his work today;
He has no feet but our feet
To lead others in his way;
He has no voice but our voice
To tell others how he died;
He has no help but our help
To lead them to his side.”

Human Relations Sunday | 1.19.25
Tuesday Jan 21, 2025
Tuesday Jan 21, 2025
Each Sunday, we will consider common hurdles and questions we face as we consider ways to deepen our sense of community. In the opening passages of our lesson, Paul warns against idolatry. Fractions in the community (such as that in Corinth) are one of the many difficulties that result from idolatry. We become like the God in which we worship. Within the life of the church, today is Human Relations Sunday. It is observed on the Sunday before MLK’s birthday, and it is a call for the church to recognize the right of all God’s children to realize their potential as human beings in relationship with one another.

So Far So Natural | 12.15.24

Monday Dec 16, 2024
We are going to spend two weeks with John the Baptist. Last week, we learned that he told the people to reform their lives. Like many philosophers of the time, he calls people decent. So far, so natural. Things take a turn, though, when he predicts that one more powerful than him is coming that will dip our lives into the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus will connect us to a Source, the power of Love itself. The Spirit’s winnowing fork will sift between what is life-enhancing and life-denying.

John the Baptist comes to the Judean countryside preaching repentance. And the people ask with enthusiasm, what they should do? John tells them, essentially, that they should be decent people. Like the Hebrew prophets of old, he mentions concrete acts of justice. To do this, we must change our attitudes about poverty.
